Mount Meander – “Live in Berlin” (Gotta Let It Out, 2019)

“Live in Berlin” is the newest release of “Gotta Let It Out” label. Album was recorded by “Mount Meander” – it’s an ensemble where together play Kārlis Auziņš (saxophones), Lucas Leidinger (piano), Tomo Jacobson (double bass) and Thomas Sauerborn (drums). Quartet has exceptional sound, modern asnd innovative point of vue and new conception of avant-garde jazz. Musicians are improvising differently from the other players – rare combos, exotic tunes, eclectic stylistic pairs, bordering dynamics, illustrative musical language and marvelous instrumentation are the main compounds of it. The music is filled with passion, life, brightness and drive. All four musicians are famous and active members of international avant-garde jazz scene. They had been playing and collaborating together with dozens of other famous and original jazz masters. The musicians keep the main basics of avant-garde jazz and the roots of it. The traditions of 1960’s or 1970’s avant-garde jazz are mixed up with innovative, bright and experimental innovations of contemporary avant-garde jazz.

“Live in Berlin” has bright, dynamic and passionate sound. The compositions are formed from the main basics of the avant-garde jazz, free improvisation and some tunes of modern jazz. The roots of 1960’s avant-garde are kept and mixed with the newest innovations. Outrageous timbres, exotic tunes, strange noises, specific and original ways of playing create exceptional and modern sound. Each musician is improvising with passion and pleasure – their improvisations has expressive, glamorous and bright spirit. Drive, joy, passion and affection are the main compounds of all the compositions. It makes the highest effort to whole album. The compositions have vibrant and powerful musical pattern. It’s based on free improvisation, sound experiments, frantic solos, moving and trembling tremolo, rich musical language and dozens of new, shocking, crazy or completely wild methods of playing and improvising. Musicians are using their fantasy – each of them has modern point of view and inspiring conception. Multi-layed, colorful, passionate and illustrative musical pattern is based on polyphony, sharp and dynamic harmony, variable rhythmic, wide range of scales, repetitive series of rhythms or melodies, sudden changes of moods, bright expressions, gorgeous ornaments and incredible instrumentation. All these elements make an effort to driving and touching sound. Musicians are jumping from the one mood to another – they are doing it just marvelous. Any effort or force isn’t used here – each composition is a great compilation of original decisions, shocking ways of playing, fabulous experiments and luminous solos. Kārlis Auziņš and Lucas Leidinger form the main melodic line. Saxophones by Kārlis Auziņš are expressive, moving and bright. Saxophonist has an expressive, hot, strict, rigorous and turbulent playing manner. His imrpovisations are real bursts of energy. Here together metts wild energy, brave adventures, ambitions and fantastic experiments. Saxophonist is kwwping noisy, dramatic and vibrant mood for the most of the time. Expressive melodies are accompagnied by moving and charming solos, trembling, cibrant and powerful blow outs, intense riffs and luminous, bright and dizzy passages. Special effects, lonely tunes, repetitive pieces, colorful ornaments and gorgeous timbres are mixed up with calm and peaceful mood, static rhythmic and cool, warm and natural sound. Saxophonist accents the contrast between wild, roaring and frantic solos, gentle and light pieces, subtle and deep comtemplations, dark and depressive downs, rising and dramatic culminations or simply marvelous and inspiring passages. Piano of Lucas Leidinger is moving, fresh, tremendous and sparkling. Furious roulades, vivacious and terrific solos, remarkable and expressive melodies, touching, vibrant and powerful energy’s explosions, gorgeous passages, innovative ways of playing and especially effective and hypnotic musical language – that’s the main compounds of piano improvisations. Softness and light is against furious, angry and aggressive episodes, shrieky tunes, breaking sessions, dramatic culminations or calm, romantic, cool and peaceful pieces. The variety of moods and characters is enormously huge – pianist has emotional, bright, vibrant and expressive playing manner. Double bass by Tomo Jacobson is subtle and vivid at the same time. Firm and monotonic bass line is created by using rhythmic sessions and repetitive tunes. Subtle and soft tunes, gentle and light excerpts, peaceful, deep, solemn, modest and solid melodies are mixed up with musical experiments and strange timbres. It’s mixed up with vivid, luminous, dramatic, terrific and turbulent culminations. The difference between two contrasting styles of improvising makes an effort to remarkable, universal and intense sound of double bass. Drums section is leaded by Thomas Sauerborn. Talented drummer has impressive style of improvising – he masterfully turns over dozens of moods, characters and rhythms. Dramatic, luminous, hysteric and shrieky free improvsations, aggressive and expressive bop, hard bop and neo bop rhythms are all together with calm, solid and monotonic tunes, lonely beats, heavy hard core, intense and hard rhythmic of rock and spontaneous surprises and changes, who makes a surprising and luminous sound of rhythmic section. The musicians are improvising just fantastic – the music is filled with brightness, drive, expressions and innovative musical decisions.
