Marco Olivieri, Antonio Valente & Sanjay Kansa Banik – “RUMORE D’ACQUA” (Plus Timbre, 2019)

“RUMORE D’ACQUA” is a new release of “Plus Timbre” records. The music was recorded by Marco Olivieri (piano), Antonio Valente (vibraphone) and Sanjay Kansa Banik (tabla). The music is bright, passionate and expressive, filled with virageous solos, impressive riffs and wild culminations. Three great jazz masters are talented improvisers and active members of international avant-garde jazz scene. They succesfully fuse together different kinds of sounds, expressions, tunes and playing techniques. Here modern innovations, traditional Asian music, contemporary Western Europe music, free improvisation, American and European avant-garde jazz, some modern and contemporary jazz styles are organically blended together. Rich musical language, multi-layed and expressive musical pattern, independent and highly ornamentated melody line, dynamic rhythmic section, gorgeous background and innovative instrumentation are the basics of “RUMORE D’ACQUA”.

Piano is the key of the melody line. It’s full of attractive engaging solos, charming passages, expressive vital melodies, full blasts of energy, breaking sessions and wild perturbations. Marco Olivieri is the master of his art – his music is completely based on free improvisation and avant-garde jazz softly related to contemporary academical music in instrumental section. An improviser is fusing together his very own and home-made playing techniques, sonoristic experiments and extended playing techniques of contemporary academical music. The main melody line is beautifully illustrated with ornaments, flowing sparkling passages, virageous twists and modern expressions of all kinds. The contrasts and sudden changes in a melody line, harmonic basement or rhythmic section are usual and frequently made – a pianist jumps on risky combinations, makes tricky and amazing risings, when goes straight to wild attacks filled with perturbations, radiant riffs, driving solos and blooming culminations. Sharp persecuting sequences of dissonances and chords of other compilations contain a bright, aggressive and stable harmonic section. Repetitions, series, typical rhythms of various jazz styles – complicated bebop, aggressive hard bop, hot explosions and extravagant investigations of avant-garde jazz and etc. – are gently combined together. All that makes an effort to free, admiring, charming and bright piano’s improvisations. The piano is the centre of the melody line – it also dictates the main mood and sound of whole album: sparkling, driving, filled with crazy virages, twists, thrilling strikes, radiant perturbations and gorgeous ornaments. South Asian music rhythms and traditional ornamentations are brought in by Sanjay Kansa Banik. His tabla is the source of rare combos, exotic tunes, eclectic stylistic allusions of avant-garde jazz, free improvisation, American experimental jazz and Asian music. Modern, complicated, nervous, hysteric and expressive rhythms, breaking sessions, gorgeous and exotic sounds, tiny ornaments and astonishign sonoristic experiments contain the basics of his music. Sanjay Kansa Banik manages to create a remarkable, expressive and bright sound – tabla is the basic of the rhythmic section and makes a great combo with moving piano and soft vibraphone’s tunes. Tiny elegant ornaments, soft relaxing tunes, gorgeous timbres, expressive rhythms or meditative repetitions – vibraphonist Antonio Valente gently blends together all these elements. The music of this album has an inspiring, evocative and expressive sound.
