“Passage” is one of the newest release of “New Focus Recordings” which was released last month. The compositions by various contemporary music composers are recorded in this album by chamber ensemble “Longleash”. This ensemble members are talented and creative musicians – Pala Garcia (violin), John Popham (cello) and Renate Rohlfing (piano). Each musician of this trio has original and individual playing style. Different styles, creative and modern musical decisions, innovative and interesting performing of contemporary academical music compositions are the main reasons why this trio had became famous ensemble. The most part of their compositions are written by talented and inventive young composers. Their playing is adventurous, bright, versatile and interesting.
This album compositions were written by several composers – Christopher Trapani, Clara Iannota, Yukiko Watanabe, Juan de Dios Magdaleno and Francesco Filidei. All compositions are dedicated for chamber ensemble and have original and extraordinary sound. Each composition is based on different and unique composing style, colorful and dynamic sound and various musical expressions. Neoromantism, post-romantism, modernism and academic avant-garde styles are organically and masterfully combined together in one composition. The musical pattern is very lively, colorful and dynamic, based on sudden and unpredictable changes of moods and characters. Silent, soft and quiet solos are fused with bursts of energy, wild fast solos, virtuosic pasages, sharp and aggressive harmony and dynamic rhythmic. The composers reveal and demonstrate their original and unique musical language and composing style. Innovative and modern instrumentation is the main element of all compositions. Each composer is using wide range of different playing techniques – traditional instrumentation techniques such as glissando, arpeggio, pizzicato are mixed together with new and extraordinary ways of playing. The variety of composing techniques also is very wide and based on different techniques. Serialism, atonality, tonality, puantilism, high variety of concepts and contrasts and other modern composing techniques are used together in these compositions. Composers improve traditional and very well-known composing techniques and mix them with their own composing style, integrate it to their individual musical language. Each composition has very rich and bright musical language, modern and dynamic expressions and is full of concepts. Absolutely different moods and episodes are masterfully combined together. Exotic, adventurous, dramatic and expressive solos filled with colorful and playful riffs suddenly turns out to lyric, sad, depressive or calm episodes with their own and independent melodies. The melodies and rhythmic basement are the main elements of the compositions. Colorful and dynamic background which is contained of various unusual timbres and strange sounds, imitations of nature sounds and other elements make these compositions to sound even more effective and interesting. “Longleash” ensemble musicians had played all compositions of this album splendidly and expressive.
