Dunmall/Swell/Owston/Sanders ‎– “So Perhaps” (FMR, 2019)

“So Perhaps” was recorded by four great jazz masters – Paul Dunmall (Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone), Steve Swell (Trombone), James Owston (Bass) and Mark Sanderson (Drums). Expression, innovative ideas and own way of playing are the main elements which join these musicians together. Each of them has an original, inspiring and innovative way of improvising. It’s intriguing, bright, expressive, filled with terrific bursts of energy, pleasant surprises, inventive decisions and sonoristic experiments. All the music is totally based on free improvisation and avant-garde jazz. The main basics of 1960’s avant-garde jazz are connected to innovative experimental jazz and musicians own ways of playing. The traditions of European, Scandinavian and American avant-garde jazz are joined together – some relations with contemporary academical and experimental music also are made sometimes.

Tremendous and impressive melody line formed by Paul Dunmall and Steve Swell, suggestive bass by James Owston and original bright rhythmic section formed by Mark Sanderson – these are the main basics of “So Perhaps” compositions. The musicians are improvising individually and with fantasy – their improvisations are made on their own decisions, which are frequently radical, provocative, inventive or simply crazy. Unpredictable changes, sudden turns, bright contrasts and surprising solos bring impressive and original sound to whole album. It’s impossible to predict where’s the music is going to turn next minute. Sometimes compositions are more similar to dramy lullabires, abstract soft improvisations or lyrical contemplations organically connected to strange timbres, weird tunes and special effects. These episodes are played in meditative, relaxing, silent, sophisticated or even dark and depressive mood. Sometimes it gets light, solemn and warm. The music is fullfilled with all kinds of motions, tunes and characters, but emotional risings, hot thrills, buzzing, growling or urgling solos, as well as dramatic vivid culminations are the most effective episodes of whole album. Here musicians show their best playing abilities, fantastic virtuosity and invention. Original, unconventional and innovative musical decisions are made to create an evocative and exceptional sound. Paul Dunmall’s saxophone is the key of the melody line. Its expressive glamorous melodies, dizzy swingy and transcendental passages, passionate solos and striking thrills are the basics of it. Huge range of experimental playing techniques, sonoristic experiments, modern expressions and ornaments is used here. The music has inspiring, blooming, bright, tremendous and dynamic sound. Saxophone dictates whole mood of the album and creates stable and independent melody line along with trombone. Steve Swell is an excellent trombone player. Solid solemn bass tunes, calm heavy solos are changed by cracking hollowing riffs, dizzy glissando, tremendous vibrant culminations and frantic wild blow outs. Saxophone and trombone are the fundaments of the melody line which also highly effect whole sound. Impressive rhythmic section and gorgeous background is created. Bass player James Owston is using all his wide capacities and creativity to create an interesting sound. His music is based on heavy, solemn, dynamic and touching melodies accompagnied by colorful sounds, sharp weird tunes, special effects or strange timbres, and ornaments of all ranges as well. That makes a meditative, effective and inspiring sound. Drums section by Mark Sanderson is a mix of various rhythms and tunes. Steady beats, roaring trills, booming rolls, emotional trills, vibrant trembles, hysteric riffs, expressive complicated series, swingy rhythms or impressive spontaneous solos and immediate responses to other improviser’s playing contai nthe main base of these compositions. The music of this album is played with affection, inspiration, drive and innovative ideas.
