Frode Gjerstad / Fred Lonberg-Holm / Matthew Shipp – “Season of Sadness” (Iluso Records, 2019)

“Season of Sadness” is out now on “Iluso Records”. Album was recorded by three featured jazz masters – Frode Gjerstad (alto sax and clarinet), Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello) and Matthew Shipp (piano). All three jazz masters have their own and unique sound and passionate playing manner. They are the central figures of avant-garde jazz scene – musicians had been collaborated and improvised with other featured jazz stars. Their music is suggestive, bright and moving. The improvisers like to experiment on each case of musical language – that’s why their music is full of evocative and fresh ideas, stunning sonoristic experiments and innovative playing techniques. All music is based on free improvisation, the basics of avant-garde and experimental jazz and stylistic allusions to other jazz styles. Innovations and traditions, subtle excerpts and sparkling culminations, hysteric, perturbating sessions or light, transcendental dizzy passages – musicians create huge range of sounds, colors, expressions and tunes. Musicians fit together just fine – their free improvisations always have a bright, driving and innovative sound.

“Season of Sadness” is full of bright, passionate and luminous sound. Fresh and evocative ideas, luminous, bright and tremendous culminations, full perturbationg blasts of energy – these elements make an effort to bright and exclusive sound. Together the improvisers create an original and bright musical pattern. An open form is chosen for all the compositions. It’s an ideal form to make a free collective improvisation which is the basic of almost each composition. The musicians are free to improvise on their own, get on brave exclamations, luminous and bright culminations or spontaneous answers to each other’s playing. All music is based on free improvisation, avant-garde and experimental jazz, as well as has an influenze of bebop, post bop, hard bop and other modern jazz styles. An instrumental section is just impressive – it’s an organic mix of experimental, specific, rare, exotic, eccentric, classical and traditional ways of playing mixed up all together. The music is composed by using different compounds who are highly contrasting with each other. Solid and independent melody line is created by piano and reeds. Saxophone’s and clarinet’s tunes have a remarkable and exclusive sound. Improviser Frode Gjerstad has hiw own sound – it’s based on expressive, moving, bright and sharp playing manner. Musician also gets on adventurous culminations, dives in subtle and effective research of new timbres and sounds and makes a nice expansion of sound comfort’s zone. He manages to combine together free improvisation, avant-garde and experimental jazz, as well as some tunes related to bebop, post bop, hard bop and other modern jazz styles. Piano tunes by Matthew Shipp are moving, tremendous and bright. Talented and experienced pianist has a remarkable, evocative and simply fantastic playing manner – here’s drive, energy, vibrant perturbation and pleasure to improvise are connected together with masterful virtuosity, splendid and effective playing technique and unique sound. All music is totally based on avant-garde and experimental jazz. The tunes of various modern jazz styles also are integrated to the musical pattern. Remarkable and passionate riffs, growling, roaring, trembling and impressive solos, transcendental dizzy passages, rigorous and furiously fast roulades, shrieky aggressive and perturbating disonances sequences or monotonic subtle and calm tunes – this huge range of sounds, elements and characters contain universal and amazing musical pattern of piano tunes. Cello tunes by Fred Lonberg-Holm illustrate the melody line, is the source of strange and innovative timbres, subtle contemplations and stable bass line. Cello has dozens of functions – it gives a stable harmonic basement and tight bass line. Gorgeous ornaments accompagnie exclusive, moving, tremendous and vibrant melodies, wild and expressive culminations, perturbating riffs, full blasts of energy or calm down to monotonic soft and minimalistic samples.
