Heisenberg Quintet – “Live At Kuhlspot” (Aut Records, 2018)

“Live At Kuhlspot” is new release of “AUT Records”. Album was recorded by “Heisenberg Quintet”. Experimental jazz ensemble is formed from Anna Kaluza (alto sax), Nikolai Meinhold (piano), Hannes Buder (guitar), Stephan Bleier (double bass) and Rui Faustino (drums). Quintet has its own sound, original style and modern conception. The musicians firstly make the priority to production of bright and experimental playing techniques, colorful expressions, evocative sounds and exotic combos. The search of weird timbres, strong contrasts and individual pieces are gently fused together in one place. That makes surprising, bright and vivacious sound of this quintet. Musicians proceed all the time the main idea of their improvising – they are dedicated to create fresh and innovative sound. All five members of the quintet are interesting and experienced jazz masters. Their music is filled with new ways of playing, extraordinary improvising, bright and evocative ideas and modern point of view.

“Live At Kuhlspot” has colorful and dynamic sound. The compositions are based on multi-layered musical pattern, polyphonic structure, dynamic and emotional melodic section and firm rhythmic base. Wide stylistic variety is made here – the basics of avant-garde, experimental and modern jazz are connected all together. Musicians make this fusion in attractive and interesting way. The music is especially moving and dynamic. Music also has the intonations, playing and composing techniques, who are more related to contemporary academical music or academic avant-garde. That forms more gentle, peaceful and subtle sound, who is got together with abstract improvisations and arranged pieces. All kinds of composing ways and playing techniques are used here – musicians make exotic combos, eclectic stylistic pairs, contrasting compounds and spontaneous musical decisions. Free, wild and intense improvisation is the most important element in every way. It’s the most beautiful and effective place of all, where each musician does his best and shows his abilities and talent. Inventive musical decisions, surprises, turns, dynamic and sudden changes, turbulent bursts of energy… That’s just a small part of the musical language. Wild and roaring culminations meet the silent, slow, abstract and gentle episodes, who brings piece and lyric mood to the improvisations. Subtle episodes are for expand the main abilities of instruments, produce weird sounds or strange timbres – it’s impossible to predict, when it will be changed to stormy, aggressive, intense, vibrant and expressive culminations. All this is made with pleasure, joy, drive, passion and drive – musicians make an evocative and bright sound all together. Saxophone melodies by Anna Kaluzo is the heart of melodic section. Intense and vibrant bursts, turbulent improvisations, trembling and moving solos, vivacious melodies, remarkable, wild fast and furious passages, aggressive and roaring blow outs – all these elements are heard very much in her improvisations. It gives the main tune to melodic section and bring active, rapid and touching mood. Nikolai Meinhold also is improvising just great. Furious and strict solos, vivacious and wild fast roulades, sharp chords, colorful melodic compounds, dynamic rhythms and surprising stylistic waves – all these elements contain main part of the improvisations. Piano melodies are simply fantastic and beautiful – roaring culminations, stormy and aggressive episodes, touching solos are connected with light, gentle, vivacious, soft and lyric episodes. Guitar by Hannes Buder is more solid, firm and calm. The effective places are the solos in slow parts – fascinating musical experiments, weird tunes, strange timbres and exotic combos are made here. It’s also intense and vibrant in active, wild and furious bursts of energy and collective improvisations. Double bass leaded by Stephan Bleier, form and keep straight line of bass. Firm bass and harmonic line is formed from tight, solid, repetitive and deep tunes. It’s contrasting with vibrant, expressive and sparkling solos and powerful culminations. Main fuction of bass is to keep stable and tight bass line, but it’s also illustrates the melody and bring many new colors, tunes, rhythms and chords to the main musical pattern. Rui Faustino manages to create remarkable and energetic rhythmic section. It’s fused from turbulent free improvisations, spontaneous changes, main elements of avant-garde jazz, who are connected with rapid and aggressive rhythms of bebop, complicated series of hard bop and other modern jazz styles. Rhythmic section is made with universal kit of instrumentation, so it’s effective, sparkling and gorgeous, gently fit together with any other instrument. Musicians are great jazz masters – they make the highest effort to create fantastic, impressive and dynamic sound.
