Kuzu – “Hiljaisuus” (2018)

“Hiljaisuus” was released this month, on September, 14. Album was recorded by “Kuzu” trio – it’s Dave Rempis (alto, tenor, baritone saxophones), Tashi Dorji (guitar) and Tyler Damon (percussion). Passion, furiously rapid and dizzing solos, hot thrills and expression – all these elements are heard very frequently in improvisations by these musicians. Three jazz masters are famous, creative, innovative and original jazz masters. They have original playing manner, unique and unusual sound and not hesitate to make bordering, shocking, bright and experimental musical decisions. Because their originality and remarkable playing style, musicians are active, bright and celebre figures at American avant-garde jazz scene. Their music is filled with innovative, evocative and bright musical decisions, fresh sounds, brave, intriguinig and passionate instrumentation decisions and vital, colorful and rich musical language. All these elements are blended all together with passion, creativity and illustrative, bright and colorful expression. That makes an effort to remarkable, innovative, interesting, joyful and vivacious sound of their collective improvisations.

“Hiljaisuus” is a set which contain remarkable, charming and effective compositions. It’s filled with wide range of emotions, fresh timbres, noisy, harsh, sharp and bright sounds, thrilling and dizzy solos and rapid, virtuosic and franky passages. Musicians are experimenting in instrumentation, harmony, chords, melodic, rhythmic and other sections of musical language. Experimental and innovative ways of playing are masterfully combined together with organic, natural and usual playing techniques. Innovations and original musical decisions in instrumentation’s section is the main priority of the musicians. Creative, original and passionate improvisers fuse together franky drum rolls, turbulent and free collective improvisations, hard core and heavy rhythms, passionate and dizzy glissando, furiously rapid and length passages, charming and speedy roulades, expressive arpeggios and many other traditional instrumentation decisions, expressions and abbreviations are connected together with natural, unusual, original, extended and innovative ways of playing. Musicians have their own, fresh and bright point of wiev – they are trying to create original, amazing and brilliant sound of avant-garde jazz and free improvisation. Their compositions are based on free form, which is synthesized from many traditional forms of classical music and open forms of avant-garde jazz. That makes an effective balance between free improvisation, unpredictable sound, special effects and dozens of very well – known musical decisions. Rich and polyphonic musical pattern is formed by individual and independent melodies, which are colorfully and suggestively blended and mixed together. Moving, vivid, energetic, live, passionate and thrilling solos, turbulent, dramatic and free improvisations, special effects, tremendous blow outs, vibrant, sharp, aggressive or very gentle and soft timbres – all these elements contain the most important part of Dave Rempis improvisations. Musician is improvising amazingly – he fuses together dozens of colorful and extended playing techniques, effective expressions, bordering dynamics, sudden jumps from the lowest to the deepest registres and many other elements of musical language. He can easily switch between harsh, sharp, aggressive solos, hard core rhythms to the bright, remarkable, roaring and moving improvisations, silent and effective solos or abstract pieces. Tashi Dorji’s guitar solos are somewhere between avant-garde and modern jazz. The music is based on free improvisation, but also makes a pleasant equation with progressive, contemporary, bebop, post bop, hard bop, other modern jazz styles, gentle intonations of experimental music and some elements of various rock styles. This huge synthesis is made here just splendidly – musician creates amazing, roaring, passionate and expressive sound by using new and shocking playing techniques, special effects, innovative expressions and other fascinating experiments of various elements of musical language. Tyler Damon percussion section is rich, gorgeous, thrilling and suggestive. It’s based on marvelous synthesis of various instruments, sounds, timbres, scales and other elements of musical language – that makes effective, solid, gorgeous and independent rhythmic section of whole album. Percussionist varies through especially wide range of different playing techniques and expressions – the music gets through sharp, aggressive and strict mood to the relaxing and meditative, silent and abstract or passionate, energetic, vivacious and terrific energy explosions. Three musicians are creating mervelous, effective, passionate and energetic collective improvisations, which have remarkable and innovative sound.
