Abbey Rader West Coast Quartet – ” Second Gathering” (2018)

“Second Gathering”  is one of the newest albums, which was released this week. Album was recorded by “Abbey Rader West Coast Quartet”. It’s the group of famous and interesting musicians, whose like to improvise in a new and different way – Abbey Rader (drums, percussion), Peter Kuhn (clarinet, bass clarinet), Kyle Motl (contrabass) and Drew Ceccato (soprano, tenor, baritone sax) are improvising together. Quartet had been improvising together many times before this one. Their improvisations are filled with brave musical experiments, bright and expressive solos, turbulent and free bursts of energy and provocative musical decisions. The basics of avant-garde jazz, experimental music, bebop, post bop, hard bop, other elements of modern jazz styles contain the main part of the album. Though this music is based on integrated and organic synthesis of several jazz styles, the main elements of avant-garde and experimental jazz rest the most important basement of the compositions. Musicians always are trying out new ways of playing – their instrumentation is based on innovative and colorful musical decisions, specific and extended playing techniques, which are fused together with traditional playing techniques. All these elements make their music bright, evocative and expressive.

“Second Gathering” is based on open form, free improvisation and the basics of avant-garde jazz. The musicians of the quartet are improvising with passion, emotionally and expressively. Just like in other albums, which were released earlier, musicians are demonstrating their own and unique sound, original playing manner and searching for innovative musical decisions. The form is based on fusion of various open forms – it gives free and not strictly based structure to all compositions. Free improvisations are the basics of each composition – turbulent, effective and vibrant solos are the most glamorous and marvelous episodes of whole album. Musicians are using interesting and bright musical decisions – that makes an effort to evocative, modern and innovative musical language. Huge amount of different playing techniques, colorful and extended expressions, contrasting dynamics, drastic and sudden contrasts between absolutely different pieces, sharp, energetic and provocative rhythmic, difficult and dynamic harmony – these and many other musical language elements are the keys of this music. Musicians also are experimenting in various fields of musical language – especially in instrumentation, melodic and rhythmic section. They put together two or more episodes, which are strongly contrasting with each other. Static, subtle and monotonic rhythms are joined with expressive, rapid and bright, silent, [eaceful and relaxing solos suddenly are changed by roraring, rigorous and aggressive musical material. All kinds of dynamics are used here – musicians are masterfully switching between extremely loud to very silent episodes, sudden pauses, abruotions or dramatic and turbulent culminations. The melodic section is bright and independent – each musician does his effort in the creation of it. Bright, expressive and moving improvisations are filled with rapid and active solos, virtuosic, charming and remarkable passages, provocative and eclectic stylistic combinations, rigorous, aggressive and turbulent reeds blow outs and many other similar elements. All musicians are using effective and rich variety of playing techniques. Traditional playing techniques of contemporary academical music are used along with experimental, specific and unqiue ways of playing. That creates huge variety of colorful, unheard and weird timbres and makes rich, expressive, energetic and vibrant musical pattern. The melodies are emotional and touching – it’s filled with sudden and unpredictable twists, moods changes, sensible and engaging solos, sparkling melodies and other things. The rhythmic section is highly contrasting with melodic section. It’s also is independent and bright. Turbulent, spontaneous and frantic improvisations are fused together with expressive and moving modern jazz solos, progressive and complicated rhythmic, difficult and colorful musical decisions and huge amount of unusual timbres and sound. Musicians are improvising expressively, sensibly and with passion – it’s the most important element, which brings to these compositions remarkable, interesting and extraordinary sound.
