The Literature

“The Literature” was recently released by “Pine Eagle Records”. Album was recorded by “Rich Halley 3” – it’s Rich Halley (tenor saxophone, clapping), Clyde Reed (bass) and Carson Halley (drums). Collective improvisations by these three musicians always have interesting, moody, dynamic and bright sound. Sudden and bright stylistic changes, colorful waves and turns, gorgeous and pleasant surprises are connected together with huge variety of different jazz styles, innovative instrumentation and influenze of other music genres. Each improviser is interesting and original jazz master – all of them have their own playing manner, specific and unique sound and original improvising style. Fascinating music experiments, original and bright stylistic wvaes, sensible, engagin and touching solos, inventive and provocative instrumentation decisions make a rich, modern and evocative musical pattern. Even though the compositions are based on avant-garde jazz elements, the music has the influenze of other jazz styles. Bebop, post bop, neo bop, other similar styles of modern jazz are strongly contrasting with traditional jazz, swing, blues, Chicago jazz and other early jazz styles. This natural and organic synthesis of different stylistics, plaing manners, expressions and sounds makes an effort to engaging and charming sound of the album.

“The Literature” compositions have remarkable sound, interesting musical language and modern instrumentation. Rich Halley had chosen to play the compositions, which were composed by such famous jazz legends like Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Jimmie Rodgers, Mongo Santamaria, “The Carter Family” and Hank Williams. Rich and huge variety of different jazz styles, eclectic combinations, sudden and contrasting juxtapositions between absolutely different musical language elements are the most important elements of this album. Rich Halley had masterfully combined all these elements together. By using inventive and specific ways of playing, he had created a colorful and innovative sound. Each composition has its own style, manner, musical language and rhythmic. It’s highly differs from the others. The compositions by “Rich Halley 3” demonstrate the remarkable, effective and suggestive sound and show the masterful ability of all three musicians, how to put together absolutely contrasting and different elements in the most natural and gentle way. Expressive and turbulent free improvisations, vibrant, energetic and harsh blow outs, bright and passionate solos are gently connected together with spontaneous solos, fascinating musical experiments, romantic and sweet melodies of swing, slow and relaxing blues solos or very expressive, moving and sharp bebop or hard bop compositions. All kinds of different rhythms, melodic intonations, chords and sounds are fused together in one place. Static, slow and monotonic traditional jazz rhythms are fused together with moving and passionate bebop rhythmic, especially rapid roulades, relaxing and gentle swing or complicated modern jazz solos. Musicians masterfully go through all these different moods and zones of sound. Famous compositions by jazz legends are played by a trio in a new and different way. It demonstrates the other side and creates fresh and innovative sound of very well-known jazz standarts and compositions. Gorgeous and gentle saxophone solos, expressive, moving and dynamic melodies, romantic, lyric and relaxing swing or big band intonations, harsh, turbulent and roaring bursts of energy and vibrant blow outs – it’s the most important elements of saxophone improvisations. Subtle, dynamic or very miving and attaching bass improvisations gently fit together with saxophone. Monotonic, same and slow tunes are gently fused together with engaging, rapid, energetic and bright solos, interesting sound experiments or very solid and independent bass line. The srums section is highly contrasting with the other instruments and is based on marvelous synthesis of modern, traditional and experimental jazz styles. Turbulent improvisations, gentle and sensible swing organically and effectively go along together with expressive and passionate solos, spontaneous musical decions, harsh and vibrant bursts of energy or silent pauses. This music has marvelous and effective musical language, where each element has its own and suitable place. Interesting, bright and suggestive improvising makes touching, moving and passionate sound of this album.

  1. There are some fascinating closing dates on this article however I don’t know if I see all of them middle to heart. There may be some validity however I will take maintain opinion until I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we would like more! Added to FeedBurner as well
