Norbert Rodenkirchen|Robbie Lee|James Ilgenfritz – “Opalescence” (2018)

“Opalescence” was recently released on June. The album was recorded by Norbert Rodenkirchen (9 medieval flutes by Giovanni Tardino, baroque flute, Beaudin modern traverso and piccolo), Robbie Lee (ontrabass recorder, chalumeau, gemshorn, sopranino saxophone, Beaudin and medieval flutes, glissando Kingma-system quarter-tone flute, Kotato F flute) and James Ilgenfritz (double bass). These three musicians are the masters of combining together wide range of different music styles, epoches and genres. It’s very hard to name one style, which is the basic of this music, even though, it’s mostly based on various styles of academical music. Experimental music, ambient, concrete and spectral music, academic avant-garde, free improvisation, electronics, jazz and many other music styles are joined together organically and creatively. Musicians are masterful and taleneted multiinstrumentalists – they can play with many different types of the same instrument. Together musicians are combining the most ancient and modern types of flutes, saxophones, recorders and other reeds. Their music joins together the instruments of Baroque, Renessaince, Romantism and modernism music. Musicians create and explore new forms and things in experimental and spontaneous way – they are dedicated to create interesting, effective and unusual sound. Their music has remarkable, passionate and modern sound.

“Opalescence” is filled with eclectic and interesting instrumental combinations and has rich, bright and modern musical language. Wide range of different types of flutes and other reed group instruments are used here – musicians masterfully vombine together medieval, baroque, piccolo, modern traverso, contrabass recorded, soprano saxophone and many other instruments in one place. They are the masters of fusing together different sounds, playing techniques, moods, feelings, instrumentation decisions and musical experiments. This music is filled with changes and turns – by using each type of instrument musicians fuse together the intonations of medieval, baroque, renessaince, classicism, romantism and post romantism, and finally – modernism and post modernism music. Harmonic elements of different centuries and epoches are joined together in one place. It’s very interesting to hear how fastly this music is changing – from the sacral and soft sound it gets to expressive and frantic soprano saxophone solos, calm and peaceful melodies, expressive, harsh and turbulent culminations or deep, vibrant, dark and rigorous places. It’s very hard to predict, where this msuic is going to get next – musicians are the masters of travelling through different epoches and centuries. They are fusing together specific ways of playing with traditional forms, rules of instrumentation, composing techniques and other musical language elements which are typical to some epoche. The changes of musical language are made very gently and softly – wide range of different and contrasting playing and composing techniques are connected together in organic and natural way. All the elements are integrated together in one place and make a suggestive, dynamic and interesting sound. The musical language is especially rich and bright – dozens of different expressions, rhythms, sounds, intonations and instrumentation decisions are used here. Soft consonances, quarter tones, tonal and atonal harmony, expressionistic dissonances, modernism and post-modernism harmony tendencies are fused together and make a colorful sound. The stylistic range is extremely huge – sacral music, folk music, ethnic music of various countries, Western Europe music, the elements of traditional Renessainces and Baroque dances, impressionism and post impressionism are joined together with Afroamerican music, traditional, modern and experimental jazz, free improvisation and experimental music. Norbert Rodenkirchen and Robbie Lee masterfully switches between different kinds of flutes, recorders and saxophones – music is very bright, clear and dynamic. Flutes melodies are based on free form – it also has many place eft for improvisation and musical experiments. Difficult, modern and extravagant instrumentation is the main key of flute solos – it helps musician to create contrasting, shocking, extravagant and remarkable sound. James Ilgenfritz double bass is keeping a firm, strict and independent rhythmic section. Musician masterfully fuses together experimental and traditional ways of playing, sound experiments and explore new sounds and timbres. His music moves from dark, depressive and sorrowful pieces to light, expressive, bright and moody culminations with vivacious melodies, sparkling and charming passages, soft pizzicato, playful stacatto and many different expressions and playing techniques. The msuic of this album is based on synthesis between music of different epoches, styles and centuries – it has unique, remarkable and original sound.
