Otomo Yoshihide & Paal Nilssen-Love – “19th of May 2016” (PNL, 2018)

“19th of May 2016” is the newest release of “PNL Records”. Album was recorded by two great jazz masters – Otomo Yoshihide (electric guitar) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums). Both musicians are very famous in contemporary avant-garde jazz scene. Their music is based on avant-garde jazz elements and has effective and remarkable sound. Free improvisation, sparkling and charming solos, expressive and passionate turns, eclectic instrumental combinations and contrasting music styles – all these elements contain the main part of these compositions. Both musicians have their own and original playing style – they are dedicated to create colorful, evocative and innovative sound. Astonishing musical experiments produce huge range of unusual sounds, special timbres and strange tunes. Unique playing manner, remarkable and evocative sound, creative, free and expressive playing manner make an effort to original, interesting and marvelous sound of their improvisations. While both jazz masters are improvising together, their music organically joins together and form rich, colorful and gorgeous musical pattern and language.

“19th of May 2016” has remarkable and interesting sound. The music is based on avant-garde jazz, but also has many relations with modern and contemporary jazz styles, sound experiments and mild intonations of rock styles. Bright, specific and effective playing manners, special effects and colorful musical decisions make a brght, joyful,energetic and expressive sound. Free improvisation is the basement of all the compositions – musicians are dedicated to create innovative and fresh sound by using shocking and extravagant playing techniques and sound experiments. They are trying to expand traditional comfort zone of the instrument’s. Inventive, astonishing and provocative improvising helps musicians to create a marvelous sound, rich musical pattern and modern musical language. Their inventive decisions mostly are heared in instrumentation section. It’s based on specific and experimental playing techniques, which are gently mixed together with some extended and modern playing techniques of academical music. The form rests the same all the time – it has  all the main elements of free and independent form, created by using various elements of open forms. The compositions have fascinating, turbulent, expressive and passionate sound, which rests all the time. Electric guitar improvisations by Otomo Yoshihide have vibrant and energetic sound. His guitar melodies has main elements of his playing style – free jazz, creative jazz, experimental jazz and modern jsxx and some intonations of somthing rock styles. Musician flows between different styles, moods and expressions. Remarkable and bright solos, expressive and passionate melodies, turbulent and effective episodes, harsh, shrieky and hard riffs, unusual sounds and timbres – all these elements ontain the main part of these improvisations. Musician is improvising with passion – his music is filled by interesting and innovative decisions, colorful and bright contrasts and musical experiments. By using wide range of unusual and experimental ways of playing, guitarist produce dozens of unusual, strange and interesting timbres, noises and expressions. Drum and percussion section gently fits together with elecric guitar and make an opposite to it. Paal Nilssen-Love is an experienced and creative improviser. He can fuse together many different musical language elements, which are the opposites to each other. The rhythms of experimental and free jazz styles are fused together with expressive and sharp bebop, post bop, hard bop and other modern jazz styles. He also likes to improvise spontaneously and make a quick unpredictable changes – that’s why his music has rich, gorgeous, energetic ad contrasting sound. All kinds of rhythms, expressions, special effects and playing techniques are joined together with touching and moving percussion. That makes an effort to original, bright and ndependent background, which naturally and effectively illustrates whole album. Both musicians are improvising differently from each other – they show their best ability of improvising, invention, creativity and create bright, passionate and dynamic sound.
