Flamingo – “LOUD” (Relative Pitch Records, 2018)

“LOUD” was released by “Relative Pitch Records” on May. The album was recorded by Chris Heenan (contrabass clarinet), Adam Pultz Melbye (double bass) and Christian Windfeld (snare drum and objects). All three musicians are interesting and creative jazz masters and improvisers. Their improvising style is based on original playing manner, inventive musical decisions, modern instrumentation and rich musical language. The music is totally based on avant-harde jazz, but also has some relations with bebop, post bop, neobop and other modern jazz styles. The strong intonations of experimental, contemporary academical, ambient, concrete and spectral music also are heard very much in their improvisations. Despite of huge and colorful range of various playing manners and styles, the basic of this album is sound experiments and free improvisation. Musicians are trying out new ways of playing, original playing manners and fusing together various elements of musical language. They create interesting and original sound.

The music of “LOUD” has an interesting and original sound. This music is based on huge variety of timbres, sounds, playing techniques and colorful contrasts. Musicians are experimenting in all sections of musical language – especially in instrumentation, form and sounds. They like to extract new, fresh and evocative timbres, make strange noises and invent special and unique ways of playing. Their interesting and original playing style bring remarkable sound to the album. The musical pattern of this album is based on free improvisation. The basemenet doesn’t have a separate melodic or rhythmical pattern – all the rhyhthms, melodic elements, sounds and timbres are organically fused together in one place. Seaparate and short melodic elements are very contrasting, but also has one element in common – it’s constructed by using repetitive and monotonous ways of playing. This music is somewhere between free improvisations, avant-garde jazz, experimental music, ambient, concrete and spectral music. The synthesis of these absolutely different music styles is ranged by using various playing manners and techniques. Each musician is playing originally and differently from the others. Chris Heenan contrabass clarinet has rich and passionate musical pattern. It’s filled with many different and bright musical elements – dark, deep, aggressive and sharp timbres, short and active melodic elements, which are repeated silmunateously along with rhythmic forms, and solid and strong bass line. Musician tries out experimental ways of playing – his music has a wide palette of timbres and tunes, which are produced by using original and innovative instrumentation. His music is made on the synthesis of avant-garde jazz, experimental music and minimalism playing techniques – that makes an effort to meditative, calm and subtle sound. Adam Pultz Melbye double bass gently fits together with bass clarinet and ring many new and bright colors to the musical pattern. Dark, long and deep sounds form strong bass line and colorful harmony. The wide range of different sounds, fresh and colorful timbres, original playing manners, sudden changes of dynamics, rhythms, playing techniques and other musical language elements are used here to create fresh and extravagant sound. Improviser bases his music on free improvisations and pays the highest attention to search of modern and special playing techniques. His sparkling and charming solos highly contrasting with subtle, calm, peaceful and relaxing sound. Christian Windfeld snare drum and various objects form solid rhythmic section and help musicians to keep meditative and interesting sound. He fuses together various rhythms and instruments, which are the opposites to each other – eclectic combinations, drastic and sudden changes, strange noises, passionate, charming and touching solos and many other elements are joined together in one place. The music of this album has calm ,subtle, peaceful and evocative sound, which is based on synthesis of avant-garde jazz and contemporary academical music.
