Barker Trio – “Avert Your I” (Astral Spirits, 2018)

“Avert Your I” was recently released by “Astral Spirits”. Album was recorded by a “Barker Trio” – it’s Michael Foster (tenor & soprano saxophone & electronics), Tim Dahl (electric bass) and Andrew Barker (drums, synthesizer, percussion). The music the “Barker Trio” is based on avant-garde jazz and modern jazz fusion. The eclectic and organic combinations of expressive rhythms, free and spontaneous solos, fascinating musical experiments, original and inventive musical decisions, turbulent improvisations or gorgeous solos – all these elements naturally and organically fit together. The music is made spontaneously – all three musicians are improvising free, colorfully and expressively for the most of the time. They are open for new ideas, fresh sounds, evocative and interesting musical decisions – that makes an effort to original and bright sound of this trio improvisations. Each of them improvises differently from the others – all three jazz masters show their abilities and talent of masterful, evocative and innovative imrpovising.

“Avert You I” has bright, intensive and colorful sound. The album is based on marvelous synthesis of various music styles. The basics of this music are kept the same – it’s all main elements of avant-garde jazz and experimental jazz. That hears in all sections and ways of musical language – free and turbulent improvisations, bright, emergetic, passionate and expressive sound, dynamic rhythmic, gorgeous timbres and many other elements create solid, vibrant and intensive sound of avant-garde jazz. These elements are fused together with numerous of toher jazz styles – especially bebop, hard bop, post bop, neo bop and other modern and contemporary jazz styles. Music also has some mild intonations of rock styles – some elements of rock and avant rock are brought here by electric bass melodies. The aim of the msuicians rests the same – they are dedicated to create original and evocative sound. The music has a bright, innovative and colorful instrumentation. Musicians are trying out and searching for new playing techniques, using their own and unique playing ways and extract original and unusual timbres. Michael Foster saxophones melodies make a strong melodic basic of the compositions and is highly contrasting with other instruments. Improviser plays with passion, very expressively, brightly and evocatively. The improvisations are filled with expressive, furiously rapid and virtuosic passages, colorful and weird timbres, special effects, vibrant, powerful and intense blow outs and many other elements. That finally hrows out to the most effective and important part of his music – turbulent, frantic, harsh, bright and vibrant culminations. Vibrant and spontaneous solos are the most important element of Michael Foster music. This improviser has unique playing style, which is formed and totally based on avant-garde jazz elements – his sound is especially harsh, bright, turbulent and innovative. Electric bass improvisations by Tim Dahl has some relations with rock styles, mostly in rhythmic section, but the basic part rests the same as in other improvisers improvisations – experimental, innovative and creative avant-harde jazz. Various traditions of avant-garde jazz are fused tpgether with modern jazz and rock styles – dynamic and rapid rhythmic is crossing with strong, vibrant and bass rhythms of rock music. Electric bass melodies are based on spontaneous solos, separate timbres, the formation of gorgeous and colorful colouristic elements, unusual timbres and strange sounds. The music of Tim Dahl is bright, evocative, turbulent, extremely loud and filled with fascinating solos, expressive melodies, dynamic rhythmic and marvelous passages. Drum section by Andrew Barker is formed by drums and percussion. Eclectic and interesting combinations of instruments, timbres, sounds and playing techniques make an organical equation. Drummer tries out newways of playing, fuses together the rhythms of rock styles, bebop, and experimental jazz styles. The electronics and synthesizer help musicians to create special effects, original timbres and unsual musical material. Mild and soft drone, glitch, alterations of sound, modifications of ordinary instruments timbres and other similar playing techniques are used as a colouristic element, but it’s surely makes an effort to original, expressive and bright sound of whole album. This music is based on marvelous and natural synthesis of various musical language elements – it has remarkable and fascinating sound.
