“Risky Furniture” was released this year by “33Jazz Records”. Album was recorded by a duo – Paul Jolly (bass clarinet) and Mike Adcock (piano). Both jazz musicians are great improvisers – they can masterfully combine together absolutely different music elements, make eclectic and interesting styles combinations and create innovative sound. Musical experiments in various fields of musical language, search and extraction of unusual sounds and timbres, special effects, expressive and passionate solos, touching and striking playing manners – all these elements help musicians to create bright and modern sound. Their musical language is difficult and based on polyphony – it also has many layers, independent melodies and sounds, which are highly contrasting with each other. Paul Jolly improvising is very contrasting and expressive – musician combines together basic avant-garde jazz elements, passionate, sharp and striking bebop, post-bop and other modern jazz styles and also brings mild intonations of contemporary academical music and academic avant-garde. Mike Adcock music is the synthesis between many different music styles – free improvisations, creative and free jazz, experimental jazz are connected together with contemporary academical music, its basic composing techniques, excerpts from famous classical music composers, baroque, classicism and other centuries music elements. The album compositions are based on avant-garde jazz elements and its synthesis with other music styles. The musicians make amarvelous and organic combinations between modern jazz, free improvisation, experimental jazz, free jazz, modal jazz, academic avant-garde, contemporary academical music and the intonations of various very well-known classical music compositions. All these elements are masterfully combined together in one place. The main themes of J.S. Bach preludes are made as a basic improvisations melodies – Mike Adcock illustrates these themes with unusual playing techniques, sound experiments, original and unusual playing manners and other musical language elements. Absolutely different and contrasting music styles, epoches and elements are joined together in this album – baroque and classicism music melodies, basic stylistic elements and usual playing manners, classical harmony, strict structure and form are masterfully combined with free, colorful, expressive, passionate, sharp and innovative improvisations and basic elements of avant-garde and modern jazz. Paul Jolly bass clarinet melodies have remarkable and vivacious sound. Unusual sounds, colorful timbres, sharp harmony, free improvisations, vivacious solos, expressive and passionate melodies or very static, calm and deep bass lines – all these elements are masterfully joined together in his improvisations. Mike Adcock piano improvisations also is masterful and interesting. Expressive solos, virtuosic and vivacious melodies, wild fast and furious passages, sharp and colorful harmony, dynamic rhythmic, sudden changes of musical language and synthesis between ancient music and experimental jazz – all these elements help the pianist to create original, bright, vivacious and constantly changing sound. He’s also expressing huge variety of different moods and characters, use dozens of different playing techniques and manners. The music of this album has innovative and remarkable sound.
