“Throw Tomatoes”was released on March 30, 2018 by “Astral Spirits”. Album was recorded by interesting avant-garde jazz masters – it’s Dave Rempis (saxophones), Matt Piet (piano) and Tim Daisy (drums). The improvisations by these three experienced jazz masters are full of innovative musical experiments, inventive musical decisions, stylistic waves and are especially energetic and active. Each musician has its own and specific playing style, sound and manner. Dave Rempis saxophone improvisations always full of energetic, rapid, dynamic and expressive solos, spontanoeus and sharp improvisations and have all the basic elements of avant-garde jazz. He masterfully fuses together modern jazz, experimental jazz, free, creative and other avant-garde jazz styles. Matt Piett piano solos are usually based on free improvisation and bright musical language. His playing is free, innovative, unpredictable and interesting. Playful, joyful, lengthy or very aggressive, rigorous and harsh solos – Matt Piett is the master of free, evocative and unusual improvising. Tim Daisy always searches for new timbres, unusual sounds, fuses together different styles, rhythms, rhythmic formulas and extended playing techniques. The collective improvisations by these three musicians always have remarkable, vivacious and energetic sound.
The compositions of “Throw Tomatoes” have bright and evocative sound. All three musicians are using theri own and specific playing styles and manners, experimenting in various fields of musical language. Unusual timbres, sharp roars, powerful and turbulent blow outs, eclectic and strange combinations of styles, moods or playing techniques – all these elements are gently combined together. Musicians are using huge variety of different playing techniques – traditional and experimental ways of playing are synthesized together and make a pleasant combination. Dave Rempis saxophone improvisations are especially energetic, active and expressive. Saxophonist tries out new ways of playing, expands the usual technical abilities of the saxophone. Wild rapid, furious and vibrant solos, original stylistic waves, virtuosic and outstanding passages, sudden jumps to the different registres or manners, powerful, harsh and turbulent riffs, loud and aggressive blow outs, enregetic and dynamic bursts of energy – all these elements are the main part of Dave Rempis improvisations. Matt Piet piano in this album – playful, harsh, sharp and full of contrasts. He switches between various scales, harmonies, sharp dissonances and unusual vhords, various interesting stylistic compilations of bebop, hard bop, post bop, creative jazz, free jazz and various experimental jazz elements. Spontaneous and vibrant solos, which are especially vivacious and touching, are filled with passionate and expressive improvising, impressive passages, original stylistic waves, have sharp, harsh, aggressive, dramatic – or soft, playful and expressive solos. Tim Daisy drums bring especially rapid and energetic sound. Various types of rhythms, timbres, playing techniques and other elements of musical language create original and interesting sound. Tim Daisy organically combines together extended playing techniques, contrasts, loud and powerful drum rolls, turbulent and aggressive solos, subtle, peaceful and static excerpts, playful and joyful episodes and many other elements. It seems, that all three musicians are using their instruments as a playground – they impressively and masterfully blend together evocative musical decisions, brave and interesting musical experiments, weird sounds and create especially expressive, vivacious and contrasting sound.
