Emmeluth’s Amoeba – “POLYP” (ØRA FONOGRAM, 2018)

“POLYP” was released this month by “ØRA FONOGRAM”. Album was recorded by four interesting, creative and innovative avant-garde jazz musicians quartet “Emmeluth’s Amoeba”. This ensemble members are innovative and creative jazz masters – Signe Emmeluth (alto saxophone, compositions), Christian Balvig (piano), Karl Bjora (guitar) and Ola Mofjell (drums). These four musicians are active members of Scandinavian jazz scene.  Signe Emmeluth had became famous because of projects with other famous Scandinavian jazz masters such as  Paal Nilssen-Love, Pascal Niggenkemper, John Edwards, Mette Rasmussen, Mats Gustavsson and many others. Each musician has its own and original playing style, which consists of different playing manners, individual improvising, unique sound and high variety of different playing techniques. The compositions to this ensemble are usually written by Signe Emmeluth. Her composing style is based on synthesis between free improvisation, avant-garde jazz, contemporary academical music and its various styles and elements. This music is full of sudden and unpredictable stylistic waves, turns and colorful twists – contrasting and independent episodes, melodies, sounds and playing techniques are mixed all together in one place. Masterful synthesis between various music styles and traditions, extended playing techniques, impressive musical experiments and expressions bring effective, vivacious, expressive, touching and passionate sound.

The compositions of “POLYP” reveal all the main and the most effective elements of the members of this ensemble. Free, rapid, active, dynamic and expressive collective improvisations are based on contrasts, bright, rich and expressive musical language, original musical decisions and spontaneous solos. Four musicians are improvising absolutely different from each other – independent, different and colorful melodies are masterfully twisted together in one place. The musicians pay hgh attention to search of new and innovative ways of playing, strange timbres, weird and evocative musical expressions, expanding of technical abilities of their instruments. Alto saxophone improvisations by Signe Emmeluth are filled with unusual and weird timbres, impressive and astonishing musical experiments, expressive and vivacious melodies and rapid solos. Wild fast and furious passages, powerful and turbulent blow outs, shrieky, harsh and aggressive solos, provocative and rigorous sound, wide range of different musical expressions and extended playing techniques – all these elements makes an effort to active, turbulent and interesting sound. Christian Balvig piano improvisations are full of interesting and expressive solos and sudden turns. Dissonance harmony, independent and colorful melodies, the synthesis between avant-garde jazz and elements of contemporary academical music are twisted together in one place. The main mood of Chriatian Balvig improvisations is vivacious, rigorous, live and active – dynamic and unpredictable stylistic waves and turns, contrasts between absolutekly different musical expressions, playing techniques, manners, sounds, chords and harmonies helps musician to express his own playing style and create effective and innovative sound. Karl Bjora guitar improvisations fit together with all instruments. Energetic and passionate solos are contrasting with calm and relaxing episodes, dramatic and turbulent culminations, weird sounds, extended playing techniques and many other elements of modern musical language. Ola Mofjell drums improvisations bring especially energetic and active sound. Musician creates and keeps solid, firm and colorful rhythmic pattern, which is created by huge amount of different ways of playing, free improvisation, innovative and brave musical decisions and various rhythmic formulas. Powerful drum rolls, turbulent and spontaneous free improvisations, loud and vibrant arpeggios – these and many other things helps the musician to create original and innovative sound. The music of this album has interesting and evocative sound, which is created by passionate, talented and innovative jazz masters.
