Peter Kuhn Trio – “Intention” (FMR, 2018)

“Intention” was released this month by “FMR Records”. Album was recorded by “Peter Kuhn Trio” – it’s Peter Kuhn (clarinet, bass clarinet), Kyle Motl (bass) and Nathan Hubbard (drums). All these three musicians are famous members of experimental jazz scene. Own and unique sound, interesting playing style, sudden and colorful twists of styles and musical expressions, rich musical language – all these elements are masterfully combined in one place. Three musicians had been improvising together many times – their playing usually organically and effectively fit together. Each of them are experimenting in  all fields of musical language – different timbres, expressions, search and extraction of weird sounds and noises – all these things are the priorities of their improvising. The collective improvisations by “Peter Kuhn Trio” have dynamic and expressive sound. Each musician is improvising with passion, expression and is always willing to create extraordinary and interesting sound. Their improvisations are based on contrasts – loud, powerful and rapid bursts of energy are highly contrasting with subtle, soft and relaxing episodes. The music is always full of spontaneous solos, passionate, vivid, joyful and expressive melodies and unpredictable stylistic waves. Independent melodies, rhythms, timbres and expressions are individual in each musician’s playing – it helps musicians to create rich, modern and inventive musical language.

This album compositions are based on avant-garde jazz. Expressive, passionate, vivacious and energetic collective improvisations are based on synthesis between different musical expressions, tones, timbres and rhythms. Polyphonic musical pattern, rich musical language, solid and bright melodic and rhythmic sections – all these elements are the basics of these improvisations. All compositions of this album have especially expressive, interesting and bright sound. It’s highly effected by individual style by all three jazz masters. Peter Kuhn clarinet and bass clarinet improvisations are vivacious, rapid, vivid and expressive. Musician improvises with passion, try out various playing techniques and experimental ways of playing. Furious and powerful blow outs, sharp, active and bright sound, wild fast passages, colorful arpeggios and huge variety of weird timbres are the most important elements of his improvisations. He also use very active, dynamic and expressive rhythmic, which along with dramatic, sharp and striking solos create extremely energetic and rapid solos. Bass clarinet melodies have deep and expressive sound – it’s highly contrasting with vivacious, lengthy and vivid clarinet solos and keep a solid and firm rhythmic section. Kyle Motl bass improvisations also are especially vibrant, expressive and powerful. Improviser use huge range of experimental ways of playing and musical expressions – dramatic vibrato, wild fast arpeggios, colorful and sudden glissando, staccato, vivacious and playful pizzicato, rubato and the rest of many other playing techniques are gently combined together in one  place. The most important elements of bass improvisations – active, rapid and contrasting melodies. It’s marvelously gets along together with clarinet melodies and make a high effort to whole sound of the album. Nathan Hubbard drums section is especially energetic and rapid – musician try out various original and experimental methods of playing, extracts many weird and strange sounds and colorful timbres of percussion instruments. Huge variety of sounds, colors and timbres make a colorful background and is connected with extremely expressive and energetic drum rolls, vivid and striking solos, loud arpeggios and free improvisations/ This album music is based on free improvisations, fascinating musical experiments, colorful harmony and rich musical language – all these elements are mixed in one place and make interesting and original sound.
