Chino Shuichi, Marie Takahashi, Hui-Chun Lin – “I’m Not Yours” (Mayabee Records, 2018)

“I’m Not Yours” was released this year by “Myabee Records”. The album was recorded by three outstanding jazz masters – Marie Takahashi (viola), Hui-Chun Lin (cello, voice) and Chino Shuichi (strange harp, piano). The music by these three musicians is especially vibrant, evocative, active and rapid. The masterful and organic synthesis of different melodies, sounds, timbres, free and spontaneous improvisations create fascinating and interesting sound. Three musicians had been improvising together many times – they had also played and collaborated with other famous jazz musicians. Because of their original, extravagant, innovative and modern improvising, musicians are active members of avant-garde jazz scene. The elements of contemporary academical music, especially academic avant-garde, are gently connected together with experimental jazz styles and free improvisations. The elements of various composing techniques, playing styles, manners and expressions are organically combined together in one place. The playing style of these three musicians is based on the synthesis between huge range of different playing techniques, moods, styles and other musical language elements. Musicians also experiment in various musical sections – especially on search of unusual timbres, weird sounds, extraordinary expressions which are extracted by using innovative and modern ways of playing.

This album compositions have all the basic elements of these three musicians playing and improvising style. The compositions are especially energetic, expressive, contrasting, have bright, evocative and innovative sound. These copositions are based on synthesis between avant-garde jazz, academic avant-garde, contemporary academical music, free improvisation and experimental music. Vibrant and strange timbres, various types of scales, interesting and sharp harmony, constantly changing rhythmic, colorful musical expressions, huge amount of contrasts – all these elements form the musical language and make an effort to whole sound. The compositions are always somewhere between free improvisation, Western Europe music, its harmony, form, scales and playing techniques. Viola melodies make evocative and extraordinary sound. Free and spontaneous improvisations by strings are full of unusual and weird timbres, fascinating and especially virtuosic solos, rapid passages, deep, vibrant and monotonic harmonic line and many other elements. The sound of viola also give some intonations of experimental music and academic avant-garde – various traditional playing techniques, composing methods. The melodies by viola, cello and strange harp are highly contrasting with each other – dramatic, virtuosic, shrieky and loud sounds are connected with repetitive and monotonic bass line, deep and soft solos, dynamic repetitive rhythms, colorful and gorgeous timbres, unusual sounds and soft melodies. Strings and strange harp melodies are independent, colorful, expressive and free. It’s colorfully illustrated with voice melodies, recitative elements and other things. Voice improvisations are free, spontaneous and extravagant, based on interesting musical decisions, strange timbres and experimental ways of playing. Piano melodies make the melodic pattern even more bright, form solid rhythmic section and colorful harmonic background. Various chords and pitches are combined together – ususal chords of Western Europe music harmony are connected with strange, unusual and modern pitches and tones of experimental and contemporary academical music. Sharp, dramatic, aggressive and turbulent dissonances and soft consonances are organically mixed together in one place. Piano melodies are expressive, brilliant, based on synthesis between spontaneous improvisations, various intonations of academic avant-garde and creative and fascinating musical experiments. Fascinating, creative, expressive, vivacious and interesting playiing of all musicians create original and modern sound of this album.
