Igor Lumpert & Innertextures – “ELEVEN” (Clean Feed, 2018)

“ELEVEN” was released this year by “Clean Feed Records”. Album was recorded by creative and experienced avant-garde jazz musicians – Igor Lumpert (tenor saxophone), Greg Ward (alto saxophone), Chris Tordini (double bass), Kenny Grohowski (drums), Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet on 3 and 5) and John Ellis (bass clarinet on 6). This ensemble is also known as “Innertextures”. The members of this ensemble are improvising expressively and passionate. Their music is always full of different and sudden stylistic waves – colorful, extravagant and variable music episodes, spontaneous solos and inventive musical decisions are combined together in one place. All these musicians are the masters of avant-garde jazz scene. Their improvising is based on interesting and evocative sound – musicians always try to extract new and extraordinary timbres, weird sounds and original textures and musical expressions. Original, spontaneous, evocative, innovative and passionate improvising, unique sound and huge range of different playing manners, expressions, playing techniques, experimental ways of playing and other elements of musical language elements are gently fused and combined together in their improvisations.

The compositions of this album are based on avant-garde jazz elements. Collective improvisations have fascinating, expressive, passionate, energetic and active sound. Huge variety of indpendent and separate melodies, expressive and dynamic melodies, spontaneous solos, variable and constantly changing rhythmic, deep, vibrant and turbulent bursts of energy – all these elements are heard in these compositions. Each musician is improvising differently – has its own and unique playing style. Melodic section is strong, solis and bright – has huge range of various colors, timbres, sounds and expressions. Tenor saxophone melodies by Igor Lumpert are vivacious, energetic and active. Dynamic and expressive solos, furious and vibrant blow outs, astonishing riffs, spontaneous solos with wild fast and virtuosic passages – all these elements are the most important part of his improvisations. Musician masterfully tries out extended and traditional playing techniques – glissando, rapid and vibrant blow outs, passages, vivacious and playful arpeggios are connected together with experimental ways of playing. This huge variety of extended playing techniques makes an effort to colorful, gorgeous and illustrative musical background which is consisted of unusual and weird timbres and noises. Greg Ward alto saxophone melodies are as expressive, active and rapid as saxophone’s. Bright, vibrant and passionate improvising is based on avant-garde jazz and various modern jazz styles synthesis – musician masterfully fuses together expressive, turbulent and vivacious solos, vivid and active improvisations, soft, subtle and romantic improvisations and many other things. Melodic section is even more effective and rich in 3, 5 and 6 tracks, where trumpet and bass clarinet are added. Jonathan Finlayson trumpet and John Ellis bass clarinet melodies make an huge effort to whole sound. Bright, vivacious, evocative and vibrant trumpet melodies bring the energetic, dynamic and vivid sound to the album and gently fits together with saxophones improvisations. Deep and static improvisations of bass clarinet keep solid bass line and harmonic pattern – it also higly contrasts with rapid, vivid, energetic and active reeds and organically connects together with double bass and drums. Chris Tordini double bass melodies are based on free improvising and are full of sudden stylistic waves and turns – different moods, expressions and playing techniques are organically and effectively used together. Double bass switch by different instruments – its virtuosic and bright melodies suit very well with reeds melodies, deep, static and solid bass line makes mor bright harmonic and rhythmic section. Variable and dynamic rhythmic gently fits together with drums. Kenny Grohowski drums section are independent and variable. Various rhythmic formulas, basic rhythms of bebop, hard-bop, fusion, cool and other are connected with turbulent and free avant-garde jazz improvisations. Musician creates colorful, loud, expressive and strong rhythmic section and marvelously illustrates the improvisations of the other instruments. Whole sound of this album is fascinating, expressive, filled with passionate and inventive improvising.
