Estamos Ensemble – “Suube Tube” (Edgetone Records, 2017)

“Suube Tube”was released on June 13, 2017 by “Edgetone Records”. Album was recorded by a group of talented and masterful musicians of “Estamos Ensemble” – it’s Thollem McDonas (piano, artistic director), Carmina Escobar  (voice/electronics) Alexander Bruck (viola), Julián Martínez Vázquez (violin), Milo Tamez – (drums/percussion), Theresa Wong (cello/voice), Vinny Golia  (woodwinds), Marcus Webb E. (guitar/oud), Marko Novachcoff (woodwinds). This ensemble music is dynamic and interesting. Ensemble performs the music of innovative and talented contemporary classical and academic avant-garde composers. Their playing is always evocative, interesting, expressive and vital. Vivid, playful or sad, sharp and dramatic – all these different moods and characters are subtle expressed by all these masterful players. The compositions, played by this ensemble, has very good sound quality, expressive and dynamic sound. Musicians always try out many different playing techniques, each of them plays inventively and creative. Their music is full of unpredictable and sudden stylistic waves and turns, unique and constantly changing melodies, different manners and playing styles by each member of the ensemble create striking, vivid, vivacious and vibrant sound.

Album compositions are based on academic avant-garde and experimental jazz. All these compositions have very interesting and bright musical language – free form and structure, polyphonic musical pattern, wide range of musical expressions and other elements are fused together with spontaneous and free improvisations. Musicians try out many different playing techniques and manners – speedy agitato, rapid and active arpeggios, wild fast and furious solos, aggressive and sharp separate sounds, unusual timbres, sudden glissando, staccato, pizzicato and other traditional playing techniques and expressions are used together with innovative methods of playing. The synthesis between academic avant-garde and experimental jazz is heard very clearly in these compositions – the compositions have a constantly changing musical language and structure. From the academic avant-garde composition with masterful instrumentation these compositions suddenly turns out to spontaneous, free and unpredictable collective improvisations. It’s very hard to predict, what’s going to happen next – this music is full of contrasts, different moods combining in one place and sudden stylistic waves. From vivacious, expressive, vital and active melodies, admirable and fascinating solos, sharp, aggressive and turbulent pieces there comes silent, peaceful and soft episodes. All kinds of different musical expressions, moods and characters are fused in one place. The melodies have intonations of traditional Mexico music which are synthesized together with various contemporary academical music styles, traditional music of America, various experimental jazz and various styles of European music. The elements of expressionism, post-impressionism, modernism and other styles of 20th century modern classical music are also heard in these compositions. Rhythmic and melodic sections are independent and based on different music elements – both these basics have colorful, expressive, energetic and interesting sound. Melodic section is full of soft and length woodwinds solos, dramatic and expressive violins sounds, voice elements, subtle and vibrant cello melodies. All the melodies are subtly combined together with wide range of different rhythms. Dynamic, loud and turbulent solos of drums, vivacious and repetitive rhythmic elements, soft and static episodes are masterfully illustrated by the gorgeous percussion sounds. Colorful, variable and unusual sounds of percussion and effectively used electronics create solid and interesting background. Absolutely different and contrasting melodies, rhythms, musical expressions, moods and inventive playing by all musicians create original and evocative sound of this album.
