Charles Gayle Trio – “Solar System” (For Tune, 2017)

“Solar System” was released on December 15 by “For Tune Records”. Album was recorded by “Charles Gayle Trio” (alto saxophone, piano, vocal), Max Andrzejewski (drums) and Ksawery Wójciński (double bass). Charles Gayle is one of the most famous American avant-garde jazz saxophonist who had began his musical career in 1990. He also is known as double bass player, clarinetist, percussionist and pianist. His improvising style is unique and interesting – improviser masterfully combines together many different music styles – avant-garde jazz, bebop and other modern jazz styles, traditional jazz and blues elements are just a little part of the music styles which elements he’s using. His playing is very bright and intensive, it also has gorgeous, expressive and active sound and based on unique playing manner. Charles Gayle had been collaborating and playing with various famous avant-garde jazz masters. Max Andrzejewski (1986) is talented and young avant-garde jazz drummer from germany. His playing is dynamic and active, based on free jazz and modern jazz styles synthesis. Ksawery Wojcinski is a Poland double bass player which main improvising style is based on interesting combination of avant-garde jazz, groove, various rock elements and modern jazz styles. He improvises very dynamically and active, the music is always full of unpredictable stylistic waves and interesting musical decisions.

This album music has lively, especially energetic and active sound. Various avant-garde jazz, bebop, post-bop, hard-bop, blues, traditional jazz, also the elements of various dances and other music genres are gently combined together. These improvisations are extremely wild, passionate, expressive, dynamic and powerful collective improvisations. The musicians try out many different playing techniques – most of them are innovative and shocking ways of playing and musical experiments which effect whole sound of the album. Fascinating methods of playing create wide range of unusual and weird timbres, noises and strange sounds which are heard all the time and make the compositions more interesting and bright. Charles Gayle improvising is very emotional and interesting. His improvisations are full of different music styles elements, bright, evocative and spontaneous musical decisions, expressions and other musical language elements which are masterfully combined together. Each episode which Charles Gayle plays is in different mood, character and has its own musical expressions and language elements – from vivacious, active and playful to rigorous, extremely sharp and loud. Ksawery Wójciński double bass improvisations are full of different music elements – very dynamic, lively, active and energetic bass improvisations have solid, vibrant and intense sound. Bassist plays very emotionally and with passion – various intonations of rock styles are gently fused together with avant-garde jazz which elements are heard the most in these compositions. Max Andrzejewski drums are full of wide range rhythmic formulas and unusual sounds. His improvisations masterfully fit together with double bass and saxophone improvisations. All three musicians are improvising wild, creative and spontaneous. Their collective improvisations are full of unpredictable stylistic waves, sudden changes of playing manner, sound and character of the composition – that’s why all these compositions have surprising, interesting and gorgeous sound. From wild fast, rigorous, active and rapid solos, playful and joyful duets to dramatic, aggressive or just very soft and bluesy – all these elements of different music styles are masterfully and organically combined together and create original and innovative sound of whole album compositions.
