“Wired For Sound” is another one album which was released by “Catalytic Sound” this month. Its compositions were recorded by five avant-garde jazz masters – Andrew Clinkman (guitar (left)), Steve Marquette (guitar (right)), Macie Stewart (keyboard and violin), Phil Sudderberg (drums) and Ken Vandermark (reeds). Andrew Clinkman is American avant-garde jazz guitarist who now is studying Jazz Guitar in New England Conservatory with Joe Morris and Anthony Coleman.He had played with Jeff Parker and Dave Miller, among others. He is currently an active member of “Cowboy Band” and “Angkst” as well as the “Fatum Brothers Jazz” collective. Steve Marquette is American guitarist whose music is based on avant-garde jazz and various avant-garde rock music elements. He had played with Ken Vandermark, Jeb Bishop, Keefe Jackson and many others. Macie Stewart is avant-garde jazz violinist who also plays keyboards. Her playing style is interesting and full of energetic and innovative musical decisions. Phil Sudderberg an avant-garde jazz drummer. He had been playing with numerous of famous avant-garde jazz musicians, collaborated with various ensembles and free jazz collectives. His playing is very energetic, emotional, based on synthesis between rock and avant-garde jazz improvisations. All compositions were written by Ken Vandermark. We had been writing about this interesting and famous jazz master very much so we don’t need to introduce him. Ken Vandermark music is always full of interesting musical decisions, weird and fascinating improvisations, has powerful, intense, aggressive and sharp sound.
This album compositions have original and expressive sound. All of them are based on avant-garde jazz and various rock styles synthesis. Powerful, expressive, emotional and energetic guitar solos, loud and intense keyboards and reeds melodies, dynamic and turbulent sound – all these elements are the main elements of these improvisations. Wild fast, free and creative collective improvisations are always somewhere between very powerful, loud and intensive rock and creative, free, experimental and turbulent sound of avant-garde jazz compositions. All musicians try out many different extended playing techniques – they try out specific, innovative and stunning ways of playing and also combine them with traditional playing techniques. Fabulous and fascinating guitars riffs are putted together with absolutely different reeds solos which have emotional, energetic and sharp sound. Each instruments improvisation is independent and individual, based on different stylistic waves and expressions. Musicians masterfully varies between very loud, aggressive, provocative and energetic sound to silent, subtle and relaxing episodes or to vivacious and playful episodes. The variety of moods and characters is very important element for these compositions because it makes them to sound more interesting, energetic and very active. The episodes which are played in this album always have two different music styles elements – the synthesis between rock and avant-garde jazz is heard all the time very strongly because all the musicians are combining the main elements of these two music styles all the time in their compositions. Their playing is interesting and free, full of spontaneous musical decisions and experiments. The high variety of unusual timbres and sounds is heard very much in here – weird noises, separate sounds and unusual timbres create gorgeous and colorful musical background. Sharp, dissonance, aggressive and rigorous harmony, loud and powerful all instruments solos create vibrant, turbulent and very active sound of these compositions.
