Nakama – “Worst Generation” (Nakama Records, 2017)


“Worst Generation” is the new album released on November by “Nakama Records”. This album is the synthesis between academic avant-garde, experimental music, avant-garde jazz and Japan folk music intonations. Christian Meaas Svendsen (double bass), Andreas Wildhagen (drums), Ayumi Nataka (piano), Adrian Loseth Waade (violin) and Agness Hvizdalek (voice) – these five interesting and original musicians had recorded this album compositions. All five musicians have original and evocative playing style which mostly is based on avant-garde jazz and electronic music synthesis. Musicians inventively and creatively combine together many different music styles and intonations – Japan folk music elements, harmony and rhythmic, European academic avant-garde, experimental music sounds, field recordings and many other elements. Their music is always full of interesting, unpredictable and unexplainable musical decisions which bring to the music effective, spontaneous and vivacious sound.

Album compositions are based on free form, polyphonic structure, various electronic music devices, computer sounds, acoustic instruments melodies and timbres and many other musical language elements. The main basic of the album is acoustic instruments – colorful and extraordinary melodies bring energetic and dynamic sound. The compositions are based on collective improvisations and have the elements of various music styles gently combined together. Japan music scales, harmony, rhythms and melodic intonations are effectively blended together with academic avant-garde, European and American avant-garde jazz traditions, experimental music elements and electronic music sounds. This music has lyrical, subtle and silent sound which is created by many different music expressions and music language elements. Various acoustic instruments sounds, extended playing techniques, interesting and soft harmony chords synhtesized with Japan music harmony intonations, dynamic and peaceful rhythms and subtle background make extraordinary sound of this album. This album doesn’t have vivacious and memorable melodies or wild fast and powerful blow outs – it’s based on separate melodic elements which are connected with each other, different music episodes, lyrical and meditative sound. Most episodes are based on repetitive rhythmic and melodic elements which bring to the album monotonnic and subtle sound. Gorgeous, evocative and weird sound is the main element of the album – it’s always changing, has wide range of colors and timbres, soecial effects, computer devices sounds which make an interesting background. Various electronic music elements are used only as a colouristic element – the main sound is created by acoustic instruments and numerous different ways of playing. Innovative and extraordinary playing techniques are gently and effectively combined with traditional ways of playing such as glissando, pizzicato, vibrato, rubato and many others. Musicians like to do inventive and creative musical decisions and to experiment in all ways of musical language – that helps them to search, extract and create new, unusual and extraordinary sounds. Original stylistic, bright and evocative musical language and extraordinary improvising create fascinating and adventurous sound of this album.
