DKV Trio – “Latitutde 41​.​88” (Catalytic Sound, 2017)

“Latitutde 41​.​88” is a new avant-garde jazz album by Ken Vandermark which was released on November 13 by “Catalytic Sound”. The newest Ken Vandermark album was recorded by Hamid Drake (drums), Ken Kessler (double bass) and Ken Vandermark (saxophone). These three musicians had formed a “DKV Trio”. Their music is always very interesting and dynamic. Musicians are famous and experienced avant-garde jazz masters which are most active in American experimental jazz scene. They had been improvising with various avant-garde jazz masters many times and recorded numerous of albums. Their playing is based on inventive musical decisions, own playing techniques, intense, colorful and contrasting sound and innovative musical language which is based on experimental playing. Spontaneous musical decisions, high variety of unusual timbres, sharp harmony and unpredictable musical decisions are the main basement of these three musicians improvising style.

Album compositions have interesting and dynamic sound. Expressive and memorable melodies, active and intense rhythmic, sharp harmony, free form and spontaneous improvising – these elements form the main basic of the compositions. Ken Vandermark saxophone improvisations are very emotional and active. He demonstrate his own and unique playing manner, try out innovative playing techniques and various musical expressions. Expressive, very fast and interesting improvisations have solid, intense and powerful sound. These episodes form the main part of Ken Vandermark improvisations and effect the main sound of the compositions. Vivacious, vital and energetic playing bring dynamic, intense and stunning sound to the compositions. Free and spontaneous musical decisions, unpredictable stylistic waves, loud and powerful blow outs, outstanding riffs and unusual sounds are also very important elements of the compositions. Ken Kessler double bass marvelously fits together with saxophone improvisations, even though these two instrument improvisations are quiet different from each other. Double bass improvisations have more subtle and calm sound. It’s based on unusual musical decisions and numerous of different playing techniques. It also form a solid and strong rhythmical basement. Ken Kessler improvisations are full of very fast solos, speedy arpeggios, colorful glissando, static or very dynamic rhythmic and various traiditional and innovative playing techniques. Melodic and lyrical solos are connected together with energetic, fast, loud and powerful episodes. This change of moods, character and other musical language elements create very contrasting and interesting sound of this album. Double bass and saxophone improvisations are very important to compositions melodic basement – the melodies which are strongly contrasting with each other, help musicians to create colorful, outstanding, stunning and effective sound. Unpredictable stylistic turns, sudden playing style changes, wide range of extraordinary timbres and sounds, extended playing techniques – all these elements turn these compositions to impressive improvisations with interesting sound. Hamid Drake drums are based on dynamic stylistic changes and unpredictable musical decisions – as same as Ken Vandermark and Ken Kessler, Hamid Drake try out many different musical expressions and other elements, searching for new and unusual ways of playing and extraordinary sounds. His playing is very colorful, full of active blasts of energy which is made with wild fast and loud drum rolls, energetic and active solos, outstanding improvisations and wide variety of sounds and timbres. Hamid Drake improvisations masterfully fit together with Vandermark’s and Kessler’s playing and also form a strong and solid rhythmical basement of the compositions. Spontaneous and creative improvising, original and interesting playing styles by each trio musician, inventive musical language create marvelous and dynamic sound of this album.
